So much going on - everything around you seems to be changing at an accelerating pace over which you have (or feel like you have) little or no control – kind of like being trapped in a windstorm in the dark.
You’re scared – ok, maybe very concerned or worried. Perhaps you’ve noticed that your thinking has become more negative, pessimistic or cynical. Your attitude and demeanor have downshifted. Maybe you feel agitated, more easily irritated, and are having trouble focusing, relaxing or sleeping. Maybe you are eating, drinking or “self-medicating” too much.
In any case, there’s a lot of negative conversation and “news” out there – one source tries to outdo the other with apocalyptic negative output or outright propaganda. You feel manipulated - who and what do you trust?
And maybe, just maybe, events at work - you know, rumors and such make you wonder if your job will last. You feel unappreciated, isolated, perhaps invisible.
Perhaps due to mismanagement, economic conditions or world events, your company has been sold, reorganized or merged with another – and the “new team” is going to reorganize or “right size” your department. Hey, maybe there’s talk of outsourcing your job or replacing it with new technology. Or maybe you are being subjected to unpredictable changes, working conditions, scheduling or “rolling layoffs.” Hey, IF you were really important/essential, this wouldn’t be happening – right?
Could it be that YOU need a new plan/strategy? Or could it be that you’ve skated along this far with no plan or strategy at all? Could it be that you have outgrown your job, but are afraid to make a move; because actually, the question is, move to what and how?
Lately your manager or supervisor seems to have a negative attitude towards you, always seeming to find fault, while ignoring your accomplishments. The climate at work isn’t so hot and in spite of your best efforts, your performance reviews have remained neutral or have tilted negative. Worse yet, you have been put on a Performance Improvement Plan, which in your mind is unfair and/or undeserved. Maybe you are right: The next step is – you are out the door. If you take ownership over this, why not make it out the door on your terms?
Here’s the thought: It’s doable. Don’t be scared – Get prepared!
You don’t have to be a victim, as a matter of fact, REFUSE to be a victim!
